Leader Biographies

Leader 1 - Claire Migliaccio

Claire_Migliaccio

Biography: Claire Migliaccio is currently a Full Professor at the Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, Laboratoire d'Electronique, Antennes et Télécommunications, France. Her research interests include design, simulation, modeling and measurements of electrically large antennas for radar applications, ULB (Ultra Large Band) and millimeter-wave wideband antennas, Millimeter-wave scattering measurements and millimeter-wave imaging systems, mm-wave systems from antenna design applied to radar and imaging techniques, machine learning for classi cation based on mm-Wave measurements. Her research include a large eld of applications: medical imaging, non-destructive testing, monitoring of agricultural products, security and surveillance.

Since 2015 she has she has taken on di erent functions within IEEE: she has been a member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Distinguished Lecturer Program (2015 and 2016) and has served as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (IEEE-TAP) from July 2016 to July 2017 and as Track Editor from July 2017 to present. She is currently an elected IEEE-TAP AdCom member (until Dec. 2022). She has set-up and chairs since dec. 2020 the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee of IEEE-TAP and has established the IEEE AP-S Mojgan Daneshmand Grant for Women Engineers in 2021.


Leader 2 - Atif Shamim

Biography: Atif Shamim received his MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Carleton University, Canada in 2004 and 2009 respectively. He was an NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Graduate scholar at Carleton University from 2007 till 2009 and an NSERC postdoctoral Fellow in 2009-2010 at Royal Military College Canada and KAUST. In August 2010, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program at KAUST, where he is currently the Chair Professor and Principal Investigator of IMPACT Lab. He was an invited researcher at the VTT Micro-Modules Research Center (Oulu, Finland) in 2006. He and his students have won best paper awards in numerous IEEE conferences. He has served as the Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE AP-S (2022-2024). He has won the Kings Prize for the best innovation of the year (2018) for his work on sensors for the oil industry. He was given the Ottawa Centre of Research Innovation (OCRI) Researcher of the Year Award in 2008 in Canada. His work on Wireless Dosimeter won the ITAC SMC Award at Canadian Microelectronics Corporation TEXPO in 2007. His research interests are in innovative antenna designs and their integration strategies with circuits and sensors for exible and wearable wireless sensing systems through a combination of CMOS and additive manufacturing technologies. He is a Fellow of IEEE, founded the rst IEEE AP/MTT chapter in Saudi Arabia (2013)He is currently the AdCom member for IEEE AP-S, Founding Chair of IEEE AP-S TC-8 (wireless Communication), member of APS Fellow Evaluation Committee, member of APS eld awards committee, Chair of APS student travel grants, Vice Chair of IEEE APS MGA Committee and has previously served on IEEE TC on Antenna Measurements (AP-S), Microwave Controls (MTT-S 13), and Additive Manufacturing (CRFID).


Leader 3 - Francisco Mesa

Biography: Francisco Mesa Fellow IEEE received a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics from University of Seville (Spain) in 1998 and 1991 respectively (Ph. D. thesis was awarded with “Best Science Thesis in 1991” by University of Seville). From 1989 to 1992 Francisco Mesa was Associate Researcher in the Dpt. of Electronics & Electromagnetism (University of Seville). From 1992 to 1997 he was Assistant Professor in Dpt. of Applied Physics in the University of Seville, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1997 and to Full Professor in 2010.

Since 1988 he is member of the Microwave Group of the University of Seville. During the rst years of his research he worked on Computational Electromagnetism (integral equation method to analyze passive planar structures at microwave frequencies) as well as in diverse theoretical aspects of the wave propagation involved in these structures (mainly on the computation of Green’s functions for layered bi- anisotropic structures and the dispersion relation of “exotic modes” in this structures; namely, complex modes and leaky modes). Later he has been working in the modeling of metamaterials and periodic planar structures, contributing to the development of analytic (or quasi- analytic) equivalent circuits to characterize such structures and nd physically-insightful explanations of some exotic phenomena (for instance, the extraordinary transmission/re ection, electromagnetic induced transparency, appearing of backward and forbidden bands, etc). More recently he has worked on higher symmetries applied to electromagnetic propagation and on the design of geodesic lenses.


Leader 4 - Elham Baladi

Biography: Elham Baladi received the BSc degree in electrical engineering - telecommunications from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2013, and the PhD. degree in electromagnetics and microwaves from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in January 2019. She developed a novel class of resonant metasurfaces during her Ph.D. degree and investigated their applications for shielding, imaging, and selective transmission. Dr. Baladi was a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, from February 2019 to February 2021, where she conducted research on the modeling and development of recon gurable antenna arrays for space applications. She was an Antenna and RF Filter Design Engineer with Syntronic Research and Development Canada, Ottawa, ON, Canada, from February 2021 to August 2022, where she worked on the development of RF cavity lters, duplexers, and multi-band antennas for 5G, loT, and wireless communication systems. Dr. Baladi joined the department of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal, Montreal, QC, Canada, as an Assistant Professor in September 2022. Her research interests include the development of novel multi-band multi-beam antenna arrays, metasurfaces, recon gurable intelligent surfaces, microwave sensors, and radar imaging solutions. Dr. Baladi was the recipient of the University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment scholarship, the Alberta Innovates Technology Futures scholarship, and the IEEE AP-S Doctoral Research Award. She has been a lecturer at York University (Winter 2020) and the University of Alberta (Winter 2017) and serves as a reviewer for multiple IEEE and OSA journals. She currently serves as the chair of the lEEE Antenna.


Leader 5 - C. J. Reddy

Biography: Dr. C. J. Reddy Vice President, Business Development-Electromagnetics for Americas at Altar. Dr. Reddy was awarded the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada Visiting Fellowship to work at Communications Research Center in Ottawa during 1991-1993 and was awarded the US National Research Council (NRC) Resident Research Associateship in 1993 to work at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He also worked as Research Professor at Hampton University from 1995 to 2000. Dr. Reddy was the President of Applied EM, Inc (2000-2017) where he led several Phase I and Phase || SBIR projects for the DoD and NASA. He was also the President of EM So tware & Systems (USA) Inc (2002-2014) and led the marketing of the EM Simulation tool, Feko in North America. EM So tware & Systems (USA) Inc was acquired by Altair in 2014. Dr. Reddy is a Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of ACES (Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society) and a Fellow of AMTA (Antenna Measurement Techniques Association). Dr. Reddy served as the Technical Coordinator for AMTA 2020 and AMTA 2021 Conferences as well as the President in 2022 and as the Past President of AMTA in 2023.. Dr. Reddy served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Open Journal of Antennas of Propagation, IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation and IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine. He also served as the Chair of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Young Professionals Committee (2021-2024). Dr. Reddy served on the IEEE Fellows Committee for the terms 2020-2021 and 2022-2023. He is currently serving as the President-Elect of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. Dr. Reddy is inducted into IEEE Heritage Circle by the IEEE Foundation for establishing the "IEEE AP-S CJ Reddy Travel Grant for Graduate Students."


Leader 6 - Sadegh Farzaneh

Biography: Sadegh Farzaneh is Co-Founder, President, and Chief Technology O cer of Galtronics Canada Ltd., a company he helped establish in 2017 to advance the development of next-generation antenna systems. Since 2019, he has led the company’s Engineering and Operations divisions, following earlier roles as Director and Vice President of Engineering, where he oversaw the development of advanced antenna technologies for wireless communications.

Dr. Farzaneh's professional background includes key engineering and R&D leadership roles in the telecommunications industry. At Communications Components Antenna Research Inc. (CCARI) in Ottawa, he led the design of novel cellular base station antennas. He also served as Product Line Manager at Molex (formerly SDP Telecom Inc.), directing multidisciplinary R&D teams across Canada, China, and India on the development of base station and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) technologies. His early work at Amphitech (ICX) Radar Inc. involved the development of phased array antennas. He is the inventor or co- inventor on more than 30 granted or pending patents in antenna and RF design. In recognition of his contributions to company’s innovation and leadership, he received the inaugural Baylin Technologies Chairman Award in 2024.

Dr. Farzaneh earned his Ph.D. in Antennas and Electromagnetics from Concordia University, and where his research focused on smart antenna systems for 4G and 5G wireless networks. He was the recipient of several student awards, including the France and André Desmarais Graduate Fellowship, the Doctoral Teaching Fellowship from the School of Graduate Studies, and the International Fee Remission Award. In addition to his industry work, Dr. Farzaneh has served as an A liate Assistant Professor at Concordia University in Montreal.


Leader 7 - Oscar Quevedo-Teruel

Biography: Oscar Quevedo-Teruel received his Telecommunication Engineering and Ph.D. Degrees from Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain in 2005 and 2010. From 2010-2011, he joined the Department of Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid as a research fellow and went on to continue his postdoctoral research at Queen Mary University of London from 2011-2013. In 2014, he joined the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden), where he is presently a Full Professor in the Division of Electromagnetic Engineering and Fusion Science. He is also the Responsible for the Antenna Laboratory and Director of the Master Programme in Electromagnetics Fusion and Space Engineering. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (IEEE TAP) since 2018-2022, and he acts as Track Editor in IEEE TAP since 2022. He was a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society for the period of 2019-2022. He is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to glide symmetry based metasurfaces and lens antennas. He has been a member of the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) Board of Directors since January 2021. Since January 2022, he is the vice-chair of EurAAP. He is the co-author of more than 150 papers in international journals and more than 250 at international conferences.


Leader 8 - Goutam Chattopadhyay

Biography: Goutam Chattopadhyay is a Senior Scientist at the NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, a Visiting Professor at the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA, a BEL Distinguished Visiting Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, and an Adjunct Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, in 2000. He is a Fellow of IEEE (USA) and IETE (India), Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.

His research interests include microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz receiver systems and radars, and development of space instruments for the search for life beyond Earth.

He has more than 350 publications in international journals and conferences and holds more than twenty patents. He also received more than 35 NASA technical achievement and new technology invention awards. He received the IEEE Region-6 Engineer of the Year Award in 2018, Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), India in 2017. He was the recipient of the best journal paper award in 2020 and 2013 by IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, best paper award for antenna design and applications at the European Antennas and Propagation conference (EuCAP) in 2017, and IETE Prof. S. N. Mitra Memorial Award in 2014.


Leader 9 - Sima Noghanian

Biography: Dr. Sima Noghanian is currently a Distinguished Hardware Engineer at CommScope Ruckus Networks. She is also an Antenna/RF consultant with StrokeDx and Neuspera Medical and an online instructor with the University of California, San Diego Extension. Dr. Noghanian received a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, which she took at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Noghanian is a senior member of lEEE, a fellow of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES), and a senior member of URSI and USNC-URSI Commissions B and K. Dr. Noghanian currently serves as the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, IET Microwave, Antennas and Propagation, and Frontiers in Antennas and Propagation. She is an Area Editor of Elsevier's International Journal of Electronics and Communications. She is an elected member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Administration Committee for 2023-2025 and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE AP-S 2024-2026. She currently serves as the chair of the AP-S Technical Committee on Antenna Measurement (TCAM), the Chair of USNC-URSI Commission K, and the Vice President of ACES.


Leader 10 - Laila Salman

Biography: Dr. Laila Salman received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronics and communication engineering from Cairo University, Egypt, in 2003 and 2005, respectively, and the PhD. Degree in electromagnetic and antenna design from the University of Mississippi, USA in 2009. She also worked as a post-doctoral student at the Université de Quebec en Outaouais, Canada till 2010. Her research was on dielectric resonator antennas, wearable antennas, microwave and millimeter-wave circuits and systems, microwave imaging for early detection of breast cancer and scattering from le t-handed metamaterials.

Dr. Salman joined Ansys Canada Ltd. in August 2010 as a Principal Application Engineer for High Frequency Electromagnetics. She has close to 50 academic and industrial publications on various applications and won the outstanding paper award at EDI CON 2018. Her current expertise is mainly in high frequency RF microwave applications, antenna design, 5G & millimeter wave applications, Automotive Radar, and IoT Applications.
